The project team (TBD) will be assessing the impact of the use of non-standard furniture such as sit-stand consoles on a console operators ability to stay alert.
Ensuring that console operators are as alert as possible is critical to their timely detection and response to process upsets. Therefore, selection of furniture should be selected that maximizes their ability to stay alert.
For sit-stand consoles -
• Are console operators more alert?
• Do the console operators realize health benefits?
• How many screens are needed?
• How should obscuring of screens be handled?
Process plant console operators typically spend 12 hours monitoring the process variables for the refining of petroleum products and production of chemicals using video monitors. The 12-hour shifts occur both day and night, up to seven days in a row. Until recently, the monitoring was done at consoles designed for seated operators. Sit-stand consoles have become more common, with generally positive reviews.
