Abstract

Senior design project for students from Wright State University examined polar displays versus emergent feature presentation of information. Three types of methods were used to present process data: quantitative, analog bars, and polar plots. Subjects had to detect when values were greater than 80% or less than 20%. Analog bars yielded the best performance, highest preference, and lowest mental workload. Polar displays were the worst in all three areas.

Driving questions
  • Which display type (object oriented, numerical, or emergent features) is best at detecting features in Petrochemical monitor task?
  • Does task complexity play a role in the performance of a specific display?
  • Is there an observed preference in display types between operators?
Deliverables
