Why should I care about this project?

The objective of this project was to better understand what story capturing methods members are currently using and if this knowledge elicitation method is appropriate for our industry. (Hint: It is)

Objective

The intent of this project is to take stock of the current storytelling landscape to identify commonalities and gaps regarding if and how stories are formally and/or informally used in the industry for knowledge capture and transfer. Some examples of story use include lessons learned databases, informal storytelling through training (on-the-job training), decision-making exercises, and ShadowBox training exercises. In previous COP efforts, we have observed trainers using storytelling as a method for conveying lessons learned during simulator, whiteboard, and what-if exercises. Our assessment is that many companies within the COP are already using storytelling in one form or another, but the way in which it is used varies and may be irregular across teams, units, plants, and companies. The objective of this effort is to better understand what story capturing methods companies are currently using.

Background

Storytelling and narrative are important for conveying information and valuable lessons learned. Effective stories include insights/aha moments that are striking and memorable. They contain important details that provide context for the audience. And finally, they possess emotional elements that make a lasting impression on the listener. These criteria make stories engaging and entertaining, making them easy to remember and share with friends and colleagues. Stories are crucial to any organization, but they can be elusive and difficult to capture.

Deliverables

The primary deliverables will be results from the questionnaire and interviews, which ShadowBox will provide in final report format. Using these findings, we will provide an updated plan for developing and pilot testing a suite of tools for eliciting and unpacking stories within the COP community.
