Why should I care about this project?

This project is investigating the implementation of the tools developed during the CRM Needs Analysis project, with a focus on the important role front line supervisors play in "teaming" among workgroups.

Objective

This effort will focus on what is needed to successfully use the COP teaming resources in a facility, with an emphasis on the front-line leader, a central role in teaming in all organizations.

Driving questions

• What is the role of front-line leaders in ensuring teamwork, and how can we help them?
• When, where, and how can the COP teaming tools and modules be applied?
• What will facilitators, trainers, and front-line leaders need to deploy the resources successfully?
• How can we introduce the resources to promote their adoption and effective use?
• How should we refine the teaming resources to ensure their applicability and effectiveness?
• What other teaming resources are needed (e.g., a shift handover debrief guide)?

Background

While some work is performed individually in the Petrochemical industry, much of it relies on effective coordination and communication. Teamwork, including dynamic teaming, is essential, yet teamwork skills, readiness, and training vary across locations, teams, and over time, which can create risk. Teams that exhibit better teamwork perform more effectively and safely than other teams. Adopting, extending, testing, and refining the evidence-based teaming tools and modules (“COP teaming resources”) developed in the prior COP Teaming Initiative, with an emphasis on front-line leaders, should enhance safety and productivity.

Deliverables
  1. Reports – We will provide a kick-off meeting update detailing any agreements. In subsequent months, per project guidelines, we will provide monthly status reports indicating our progress.
    • At the conclusion of Stage III, in place of a monthly status report, we will provide a written summary of the work.
  2. Tools and Resources – At the conclusion of Stage III, we will deliver relevant tools/resources. The exact nature of these will be determined based on the needs identified, but could include, for example:
    • An updated psychological safety module and supporting materials, such as a facilitator guide
    • A new teaming tool, for example, an end-of-shift debrief guide
    • Training module(s) for front-line leaders and/or facilitators
